When Alexia joined UTC Derby in Year 9, she had just relocated to the UK. A key factor in her decision to attend UTC Derby was a strong family connection, with a cousin already studying at the UTC Derby and another cousin being a practicing paediatric nurse in Watford.  Witnessing both cousins’ dedication and progress sparked Alexia’s interest in following a similar path. “She’s an inspiration to me,” Alexia says. “I really admire what she does, and I’d love to pursue a career in the same field.” 

Now preparing to enter Sixth Form this September, Alexia has chosen to study A-Levels in Maths, Chemistry, and Biology—subjects that align with her ambition to pursue a career in medicine, with a specific focus on paediatrics. 

What Alexia found at UTC Derby was more than just academic preparation. “The UTC is different and unique because it’s a small school, so everyone knows everyone,”  “The teachers really want you to be the best version of yourself. They always make sure you’re getting the best support and opportunities.” 

A highlight of her experience has been the strong relationships with teachers and the engaging style of learning. “No class is ever dull, we’re always doing practicals, watching videos, or having discussions—it’s always interactive,” she explains. “I like working with Mr Jarvis. He makes lessons enjoyable and memorable.” 

One standout experience was a collaboration with PROMAKE, where students were tasked with designing and creating a sustainable medical cast as part of a health project. “We couldn’t get all the materials we needed, so the cast was only half finished,” Alexia recalls. “But we did all the research and really enjoyed the process.” 

Looking ahead, she is focused and enthusiastic about the journey to becoming a paediatrician. Her time at UTC Derby has not only helped shape her academic path but also strengthened her confidence and determination. “Coming to the UTC was the right decision for me,”  “It’s inspiring, it’s fun, and it’s given me the confidence to chase my future.”
