Health Sciences & Social Care at Year 9 & KS4: Educating the Health Innovators of Tomorrow
Are you interested in understanding how the human body works? Do you want to make a difference to people’s lives while exploring the science behind health and wellbeing?
At UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, Health Sciences & Social Care gives you the opportunity to turn your curiosity into real-world knowledge and skills. From human biology and nutrition to public health, healthcare practice and social care, you’ll explore the subjects that underpin modern health services while working on projects inspired by industry.
Healthcare is one of the UK’s fastest-evolving sectors, with advances in medical science, digital health technologies and personalised care transforming the way people are supported throughout their lives. Through hands-on learning and employer-led experiences, you’ll develop an understanding of the physical, social and emotional factors that influence health and wellbeing, while building the communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills valued by employers. Along the way, you’ll establish a strong foundation for Post 16 study in Health Sciences and Social Care, with progression routes into university, apprenticeships and careers across healthcare, life sciences and the wider care sector.
Qualifications
Through a combination of qualifications, employer-led projects, practical experiences and real-world learning, students build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed for further study and future careers in healthcare, medical science, social care and emerging health technologies.
NCFE CACHE Technical Award in Health and Social Care
Students develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to explore the health and social care sector and the vital role it plays in supporting individuals throughout their lives. Through studying topics such as human development, care needs, health and social care services, professional values, legislation and care planning, they gain insight into how health and care professionals work together to improve outcomes for individuals and communities. Combining theoretical knowledge with practical application, the qualification provides an excellent foundation for Post 16 study and future careers in healthcare, social care, nursing, allied health professions and related fields.
NHS Cadets
As part of the Health & Life Sciences pathway, all students take part in the NHS Cadets Programme. Working alongside healthcare professionals and supported by partners including the NHS and St John Ambulance, students develop essential skills in areas such as first aid, communication, safeguarding, health and wellbeing, and patient care. The programme provides valuable insight into the wide range of careers available across healthcare and life sciences, helping students build confidence, gain practical experience and prepare for future study and employment.
Additional Professional Qualifications
Alongside their core Health & Life Sciences qualifications, students gain a range of additional certifications designed to support their personal and professional development. These include Infection Prevention and Control, Relationships and Sex Education and First Aid, helping students develop practical knowledge and skills that are highly valued across the healthcare, care and life sciences sectors.
