Uniform
All students should present a smart appearance at UTC, as we are working with employers and industry partners, we want all UTC students to appear as smart as possible and ready for business.
Across all year groups extreme styling is not desirable. Hair colour should be natural tone. Make up should be subtle. Jewellery should be limited to one set of simple ear studs. Facial piercings should not be worn with the exception of a small nose stud. If nail varnish is worn, it must be neutral in colour and false nails are not allowed.
All students should attend with a suitable school bag that is a waterproof rucksack or messenger style bag without extreme logos and designed to support the back, protect your IT device safely, hold A4 size file items/stationery and fasten securely.
Uniform Expectations Years 9 to 11
Students in Years 9 to 11 should attend UTC in the following uniform everyday:
- UTC Derby Pride Park tie (available for purchase here). The tie must be worn with shirt collar fastened and UTC logo at chest level, tie length to reach top of trousers/belt
- Mid grey business suit (with trousers, no skirts)
- White shirt with stiff collar fastened long or short sleeves
- Optional grey jumper/cardigan
- Business shoes plain black -not walking boots, trainers or other casual shoe
- Heels up to 2½ inches (smart black leather boots will be allowed, not Ugg type boots or fashion items)
- In the interests of Health and Safety, no sandals or shoes/boots with an open toe – closed toes only
- Wear the lanyard and student identification card provided
- Hijabs should be black or grey
- Suitability of clothing will be at the Principal’s discretion. Please ask if you are unsure.
- During sport and PE activities, students should wear appropriate sports clothing.
All Year 9, 10 and 11 students must wear a branded tie as part of their uniform which can be purchased from our approved supplier here: UTC Derby Pride Park Approved Supplier
All other items of business dress can be purchased either from our approved supplier (who offer affordable options) or any other suitable outlet you choose.
We also aim to collect second hand unform to support parents where possible, please get in touch to discuss this.
Post 16 Dress Code
All Post 16 students must wear business dress. Students may choose to wear their own personal business wear, or they may purchase our Post 16 polo shirt, which features our key employer partner logos and is available here: Post 16 Polo Shirt
All students must:
- Wear their purple Post 16 lanyard with their individual student ID card visible at all times. ID cards must only be used by their owner. Replacement ID cards are available for £2.00 via ParentPay or cash
- Ensure any logos on clothing are small and discreet
- Wear neutral colours and patterns. Extreme colours are at the Principal’s discretion
- Polo shirts are permitted provided logos are small and discreet
- Sweatshirts and jeans are not permitted
- Hoodies, trainers and outdoor garments are not permitted. Students wearing these will be challenged, and sanctions will be issued for repeat offences
- Keep make-up discrete and neutral in tone
- Limit jewellery to a watch and a discreet piercing
- Ensure any tattoos are discreet or covered
- Wear closed-toe shoes at all times – no sandals or flip flops
- Wear closed and sturdy footwear, particularly when studying Engineering, Product Design or Sciences
- Wear trousers on any day they are timetabled in the engineering workshop
Business wear guidance
- Business suit or separates, with trouser or skirt options. Skirts must be at least knee length; tights must be worn with skirts and be at least 40 denier.
- Tailored trousers or chinos.
- No jeans, leggings, shorts or tracksuit bottoms.
- A blouse or shirt with a stiff collar, either long or short sleeved.
- A tie of your choice, a UTC tie, or a dress scarf may be worn with a shirt.
- Plain knitted jumpers or cardigans are permitted and may feature a small logo. Sweatshirts are not permitted.
- Shoes must be a muted colour and suitable for workshop environments. Walking boots, trainers and casual shoes are not permitted. Heels must be no higher than 2½ inches. Smart leather boots are permitted; Ugg-style or fashion boots are not.
