BTEC Medical Science AAQ

Medical Science is an exciting Level 3 qualification for students interested in the science behind healthcare, disease and medical treatment. Combining biological science with practical laboratory skills, the course develops an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology and infectious diseases, while exploring how scientific research is used to improve health outcomes. Students build valuable analytical, investigative and problem-solving skills, making the qualification excellent preparation for Higher Education and careers in healthcare, biomedical science, nursing, physiotherapy, medicine and other medical and life science fields.

Course components include:

• Principles of Human Physiology, Anatomy and Pathology: Explore the structure and function of body systems, cell ultrastructure and the causes of disease.
• Health Issues and Scientific Reporting: Investigate the immune system, genetic technologies and the reliability of health and scientific information.
• Practical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases: Develop laboratory skills while studying microorganisms, infectious diseases and methods used to investigate and control their spread.
• Optional Specialist Unit: Further develop your knowledge through the study of specialist medical science topics, such as diseases and therapies, biomedical science, or human reproduction and fertility.

Throughout the course, students develop practical laboratory skills, scientific investigation techniques and critical thinking skills that are highly valued by universities and employers.

Assessment

Assessment is through a combination of examinations and coursework, allowing students to demonstrate both their scientific knowledge and practical investigative skills.
