Level 3 Mathematical Studies

Core Maths (Level 3 Mathematical Studies) is a practical qualification designed for students who want to continue developing their mathematical skills beyond GCSE without taking A Level Mathematics. The course focuses on applying maths to real-life situations, helping students build confidence in problem-solving, data analysis, financial mathematics and quantitative reasoning. Core Maths complements a wide range of subjects, including science, social sciences, business, geography and psychology, and develops the mathematical skills needed for Higher Education, apprenticeships and the workplace. It is particularly valuable for students who will encounter statistics, data or financial information in their future studies or careers.

Topics covered include:

  • Analysis and interpretation of data
  • Personal finance
  • Estimation and mathematical modelling
  • Critical analysis of data and spreadsheets
  • Statistical techniques
  • Probability and risk
  • Correlation and regression
  • Cost-benefit analysis
  • Graphical methods
  • Rates of change and exponential functions

Assessment

Assessment is through written examinations, enabling students to apply mathematical techniques to real-world situations and solve practical problems
