A Level Biology

A Level Biology provides an exciting insight into the living world, helping students understand everything from the structure of cells and genetics to ecosystems, evolution and human health. Through a combination of theoretical learning and practical investigation, students develop a strong understanding of biological processes and their impact on individuals, society and the environment. The course encourages analytical thinking, problem-solving and scientific enquiry while building valuable practical and data-handling skills, making it excellent preparation for Higher Education and careers in medicine, veterinary science, healthcare, research, environmental science and biotechnology.

Course components include:

  • Biological molecules
  • Energy transfers in and between organisms
  • Cells
  • Organisms respond to changes in their internal & external environments
  • Organisms exchange substances with their environment
  • Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems
  • Genetic Information, variation and relationships between organisms
  • The control of gene expression

This course develops valuable skills in scientific investigation, data analysis, critical thinking and problem-solving, providing an excellent foundation for a wide range of science-based degrees and careers.

Assessment

Assessment is through three written examinations and practical skills assessed throughout the course, allowing students to demonstrate both their theoretical knowledge and scientific enquiry skills.
