Connor joined UTC in Year 9, inspired by his older brother, Jimmy Bates, who had previously attended the school. His decision was driven not only by Jimmy’s positive experience but also by his own desire to take his future more seriously. “I feel like the way they treat you — like you’re in a work environment, like an adult — it makes you feel confident. It makes you feel like you have your own goal,”  

During his time at UTC, Connor participated in a wide range of competitions, helping him build valuable skills such as teamwork and problem-solving. Reflecting on his journey, Connor admitted that before coming to UTC, he felt unsure about his future. “It was something I kept stressing about over and over,” he said. “But when I came to the UTC, it set my mind at rest because it helped me decide what I wanted to do.”  

That clarity has led Connor to secure an apprenticeship with Toyota Production. He will spend four days each week working and one day studying at Burton. After completing he will become a permanent member of the Toyota team. 

Toyota has played a significant role in shaping Connor’s aspirations. He recalls his work experience there, which included site tours and team-based activities, as a turning point. “It was during that time that I realised this is where I wanted to work and build my career,”
