Jay, Engineering
Jay joined UTC Derby in Year 9, excited by the opportunity to study engineering in a hands-on, high-tech environment. Although it meant leaving friendships behind, a personal tour with Mr Kirkwood—and the sight of a 3D printer in action—convinced him that UTC was the right place. Whilst at the UTC, Jay credits Miss Warburton with all the attention he’s been able to give the 3D printer and the bespoke support he’s received.
“The UTC feels more like a family,” Jay says. “There’s no barrier between students and teachers—even the headteacher!”
Now, having already achieved a Grade 5 in English Language and making strong progress in Maths, Science and Engineering, Jay is continuing his journey by staying on to study A-level Engineering. His future plans include taking a T Level qualification, higher education, an apprenticeship, with a career in engineering.
Jay has taken part in exciting projects, including building a solar-powered electric bike for a University of Derby challenge, where his team placed in the top three. He’s also proudly represented UTC Derby at a Baker Dearing event, showcasing 3D printing and VR technology.
Jay believes coming to the UTC was the best decision “I could say that over and over again and I still wouldn’t emphasise it enough. It is such such a good school. I love it.”
